Clifton's Cafeteria

Clifton's was THE restaurant icon in L.A. "Pay what you can" was the philosophy. Incredible people helping the needy of downtown at Broadway and 7th from 1931 until 2011. Photos 1-90 were mostly taken in 2010 and 2011. Then Clifton's closed for renovation which took 4 years. Go to photo #91 (October, 2015 calendar) to see the condition of the restaurant until 2018, WHEN CLIFTON'S QUIT SERVING FOOD and became a bar! Make that SIX (maybe soon to be SEVEN) bars! And then, in December of 2018, it was announced that the cafeteria at Clifton's will become The Exposition Marketplace, which will have seven different stations that offer salads, sandwiches, hot items and desserts. Each station in the marketplace will function like a mini-market or a deli with pre-packaged items and/or foods that you can buy for takeaway or eat on the premises. Clifford Clinton is roiling in his grave at Forest Lawn, Glendale.
UPDATE - September, 2022 - the building has been sold. HOPE IS REVIVED!

I grew up loving a later branch of Clifton's Cafeteria at Lakewood Center. My Pastor took me there to celebrate my high school graduation in '64. It closed in the 80's. This is the 2nd Clifton's, called Brookdale, which started in 1931. This sign is visible only from a side street.

  • This facade was built on an unknown date and hid the original building front.
  • At the beginning of 2012, the facade was removed and the original front was revealed. The concrete blocks were a seismic stopgap measure. After the building is retrofitted, they will be removed.
