1. Old Food

Chris & Pitts

Chris & Pitt's started in 1949. This location on Artesia, just east of Bellflower Blvd. began in the early '60's and is the oldest surviving location. It's the one I went to as a young teen. There are only 3 Chris & Pitt's left as of this writing, but corporate says that they are looking for a new OC location since losing their lease on Euclid in Anaheim. Some of the staff members have been here for 30 years. There are two sisters and their aunt working together. The staff is excellent and very friendly.

The year was 1940. Chris Pelonis had a dream to open a restaurant and serve the best BAR-B-Q in the world. On a wing and a prayer, and a loan of $2,000 from his father, a Greek immigrant, he began his search for a good location. In a defunct dry cleaning shop on Tweedy Boulevard in Lynwood, Chris & Pitt's Bar-B-Q Restaurant was born. There was sawdust on the floors, wood benches, and the customers flocked in. Chris spent his days at his restaurant and his nights in his own kitchen experimenting with recipe after recipe until each one was perfect. Chris Pelonis died at age 96 on May 21, 2018.

  • When you go, go in style. A '63 Chevy fits in perfectly
  • This was the 4th location
  • The challenge is that they don't always use the best cuts of beef.
  • Walk-up Window
  • Don't want none of that foreign meat. After a renovation, this sign disappeared.
  • The decor is virtually unchanged since the early days
  • The large room
  • Lots of history hangs on the walls
  • The office
  • A nice countryside-like escape a block from the 91 freeway
  • The view from the counter seats
  • The deer has been there since opening day
  • Seems to enjoy his work
  • Celebrating the history
  • No, they don't serve bear meat
  • The fire below the BBQ
  • Hard-core
  • Slingin' the sauce
  • I was full after this great bowl of Beef Barley Soup
