This Buddhist cemetery includes the largest Buddhist pagoda in the U.S. It is a columbarium containing 21,693 niches. The cemetery is affiliated with the Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights.

  • The IPBS Buddhist Columbarium was built in 1999 as a joint venture with the Hsi Lai Temple. It is closed on Monday. Anyone is welcome to visit; there is an elevated view of the surrounding area on the 3rd level.

  • There are a series of these large Buddhas on the outside wall of the building.
  • The three extended fingers of the left hand symbolize the Three Jewels of Buddhism - the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Significantly, in this "mudra" (symbolic gesture), the hands are held in front of the heart, symbolizing that these teachings are straight from the Buddha's heart.<br /> This mudra symbolizes patience and discipline, and helps generate a feeling of stability.
