Calvary - L. A.
Since its dedication in 1896, this now 136(137?) acre site has served L.A.'s Catholic population.
Calvary Cemetery was L.A.’s first formal cemetery. “La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles Cementerio” was founded in 1820 at the church on Olvera Street.
In 1844, most of the 693 bodies were moved to what is now referred to as “Old Calvary Cemetery”. That location is now the site of Cathedral High School - see the "Old Calvary" gallery in this category.
In 1896, the cemetery moved again to this location on Whittier Boulevard and hundreds of bodies were moved.
Some estimate that 10,000 were moved.
