  • That's a 1,000 foot pier.
  • The city was founded in 1907, but the pier was built in 1904.
  • There has been a lot of change. The original pier was washed away in 1913.
  • Surf hero and legendary lifeguard Tim Kelly is memorialized with a bronze statue at the foot of the Pier.<br /> Kelly was well known to the South Bay's Junior Lifeguard Program. He died at age 24 in a car crash while returning from a surf trip to San Diego's Trestles Beach in 1964.<br /> Kelly's friends and local lifeguards commissioned this statue in his honor.<br /> The first statue was made of foam and fiberglass. The statue went through a series of refurbishings and was finally recast in bronze.
